Dry P-trap: most common, least serious

Every fixture has a U-bend holding a small volume of water. That water is the only barrier between the room and the inside of the drain. If the fixture goes unused, the water evaporates, and once the level drops below the weir the barrier is gone. Guest bathrooms, basement floor drains, laundry standpipes, unused shower stalls and bar sinks are the classic offenders.

Evaporation runs faster than most people expect in a dry indoor climate with the heating on, which is why this failure shows up as a seasonal complaint. A trap that held its seal all summer can be empty by February.

A failed toilet seal at floor level

A toilet does not connect to the drain with a joint you can see. It sits on a flange and is sealed to it, historically with a wax ring, now often with a moulded rubber or foam gasket.
